Question: As the mother of two children, with their father not speaking Chinese, I genuinely wish for my children to learn Chinese, communicate with me in the language. However, there isn't such an environment at home. What methods can encourage my children to be interested in Chinese and develop a love for speaking the language?
| |
Answer: In many overseas families, parents have their respective native languages, yet in communication, they often opt for the simplest and most convenient English as the common language. Nevertheless, children naturally possess the ability to adapt their language use. For instance, they may speak Chinese with mom, English with dad, and even understand grandma's Shanghainese. This adaptation is a result of either a lack of ability or a deliberate absence of language unity within the family. If your goal is for your children to master their native language, intentionally introducing some "inconvenience" could be an effective method.
