On December 13th, 16th, and 17th, Irvine Chinese School will be wrapping up the final school days of 2023.

We want to extend warm wishes to everyone for a peaceful and joyful Christmas and New Year holiday! The school is excited to reunite with all of you in 2024!

School will resume on January 6th and 7th, followed by the start of the first semester's final exams. As a friendly reminder, be sure to allocate some time during the holidays for exam preparation!

Question: Should children start by learning Hanyu Pinyin when studying Chinese?

Answer: Children in English-speaking environments differ linguistically from their peers in China, who are already familiar with Chinese. Starting with direct recognition of Chinese characters and using visual and conceptual aspects can provide learning advantages. Once children learn their English phonetic, Chinese Pinyin usually is quite comprehensive. It's not strongly commemorated to learn English phonetic and Chinese Pinyin at the same time to avoid penitential confusion.

問: 孩子學中文，是不是一定要先把拼音學好?

答: 在海外英語環境中長大的孩子，與國內已經熟悉中文的孩子相比 ，有截然不同的語言經驗。 在英語環境中成長的兒童，由漢字的形象直接識讀，透過視覺和概念的學習 ，反而更能在學習過程中取得優勢。孩子在習得英語的自然語音模式後，再去理解漢語拼音反是易如反掌，且避免孩子將英語的自然語音模式與漢語拼音混淆的困擾。也就是說 ，學習的目標順序清楚之後，孩子可以得到充分的學習效果。

The South Coast Chinese Cultural Association (SCCCA) is an educational and cultural charity organization spontaneously formed by Chinese in Southern California. Not only did SCCCA establish the largest scale Irvine Chinese School in Southern California in 1976, it also gathered the strength of the Chinese community in 2005 and established independently the only South Coast Chinese Cultural Center in Southern California dedicated to promoting traditional Chinese culture and Chinese learning and advocating and realizing a multicultural life."
