Parenting Tips

Question:  My child tends to forget the characters he learns, especially after a summer break; everything just slips away. What can I do?

Answer: Forgetfulness is a natural part of the learning process, and it's quite common, especially for children learning Chinese abroad. Their reading foundation often comes from school assignments and textbooks, lacking real-life application opportunities. While some parents may increase the pressure on their children to complete extra assignments to boost memory, this can backfire on their learning mindset. Parents should not overly stress about it. Instead, turn learning into a positive and engaging parent-child experience. For instance, regularly leave notes with reminders or words of encouragement in Chinese for your child, send Chinese text messages to older children, share Chinese learning apps, short videos, articles, or jokes online, and encourage creative writing with illustrations after a trip. By nurturing your child's interest in learning, the journey of learning Chinese will be more sustainable.
