The Monkey King will be premiered at Lantern Festival

美猴王即將登場元宵節活動

Free family event! Bring the entire family and join us for Pacific Symphony’s annual Lantern Festival, celebrating the Year of the Rabbit! The Lantern Festival, which can be traced back 2,000 years, marks the return of spring and the reunion of family. The act of lighting and appreciating lanterns is a way for people to let go of the burdens of their old selves and express their best wishes for themselves and their families for the future.

Pacific Symphony and South Coast Chinese Cultural Center/Irvine Chinese School join in presenting this free family-friendly festival to commemorate the end of the Lunar New Year celebration with music, dance, art making, riddles and food. Join us as the concert hall lobby becomes transformed for the festivities with floating lanterns and the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall is opened up to the public for performances featuring local music and dance groups.

The South Coast Chinese Orchestra and the Chinese Dance Company of Southern California will perform the Monkey King original musical at the opening of the event. Composed by teacher He Bin, combined with traditional Chinese musical instruments, Western stringed instrument music, traditional Chinese dance and martial arts, it tells the story of the Monkey King. It is exciting and not to be missed!

Admission is FREE, but tickets are required. To get your free tickets, select a General Admission $0.00 ticket when asked to choose your seating section.
Due to venue capacity, admission will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis throughout the course of the event. Though a ticket does not guarantee immediate admission, ticket holders will be given priority access. Be sure to print out all print-at-home tickets.

太平洋交響樂團與南海岸中華文化中心合辦的橙縣元宵燈會，訂於2023年2月18日在Renee & Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall舉行，南海岸中華樂團與南加中華舞團將在活動開場時11點至12點間演出《美猴王》原創音樂劇。由何彬老師作曲，結合中國傳統樂器、西方弦樂器音樂、中國傳統舞蹈與武術，講述美猴王的故事，精彩可期，不容錯過！

Monkey King: Original musical by Bin He

Step into the world of the legendary Monkey King as composer Mr. Bin He brings this epic tale to life through a fusion of western and Chinese musical traditions. Premiering on February 18th at the Segerstrom Concert Hall, this original musical is a must-see event featuring the South Coast Chinese Orchestra, Southern California Dance Company, South Coast Taichi Club, JT & Friends, Bei Dou Kung Fu and more! Get a sneak preview of the production in progress and be transported to a world of adventure and wonder.

Experience the birth of the Monkey King in Chapter One, with an epic theme featuring Peiking Opera. In Chapter Two, watch as the masterful interplay of violin and erhu, the two most prominent instruments in western and traditional Chinese orchestras, takes center stage. Dive into the fantastical world of Seeking Treasure Under the Sea in Chapter Three, featuring mesmerizing music with harp, guzheng and dizi (Chinese flute). Chapter Four (Uproar In Heaven) brings alive the Monkey’s inner child featuring flute and dizi. And in the final chapter, the Monkey King comes to a powerful and resounding end with the choir and poetry reading. Don't miss out on this one-of-a-kind musical experience!

《美猴王》音樂劇介紹

《美猴王》音樂劇由南海岸中華樂團指揮何彬創作，結合西方與中國傳統音樂，重新詮釋美猴王這個家喻互曉的傳奇人物。
何彬在《美猴王》音樂劇中融入武術、舞蹈、西方音樂、合唱、念唱、動畫等不同的藝術型式，呈現出表演藝術的新境界。《美猴王》音樂劇將於2月18日上午11時，在橙縣Segerstrom Concert Hall舉行全球首演。

《美猴王》音樂劇分成五個樂章，描述孫悟空從出世到自立為「齊天大聖」的故事

第一樂章《猴王出世》以靈動、寬闊、明亮的旋律開場，描寫花果山絕世美景，並加入京劇元素，引出石猴出生時驚天動地的氣勢。
接著轉成描述水廉洞中清泉紛掛、寬敞暇意仙境中，群猴玩耍作樂的場景。以輝煌的弦樂，搭配笛子、合唱，為全曲鋪陳出令人期待的張力。

第二樂章《拜師學藝》由樂團加合唱開場，中西打擊樂器與彈撥樂器先後加入，熱鬧紛呈又精采動人。其中拜師這一段，以二胡及小提琴互相呼應，述說師徒之間的情緣，鋪陳出莊嚴又神秘的氣氛。
學藝過程則以節奏鮮明的鼓聲引導，表現孫悟空從模仿師父動作開始，逐漸累積功力，樂曲中穿插笛子及電吉他的旋律，代表孫悟空學藝時仍不忘苦中作樂。
隨著孫悟空的武藝精進，音樂節奏逐步加快。由小提琴主旋律引導，進入激情的快節奏，呈現孫悟空得意忘形，露出愛炫耀耍寶的天性。
最後，因悟空的桀驁不馴，被師父逐出門，旋律轉為悲情與失望。

第三樂章《龍宮尋寶》曲風清新亮麗，豎琴及古箏獨奏互相交錯，展現海底世界神奇奧妙的迷人景象。
在金箍棒出現後，旋律轉為激昂，以帶有爵士樂風格的笛子及鼓樂領奏，展現金箍棒可大可小的超級法力。

第四樂章《大鬧天宮》以中式竹笛及西洋長笛開場，交織出天庭中仙女成群起舞，一片祥和自在的意境。
樂聲在清脆的鑼鼓陣中出現轉折，輕快的旋律表現悟空吃仙桃、喝酒及打醉拳的任性行為，因而被困在煉丹爐中的滑稽下場。

第五樂章《齊天大聖》以男、女聲合唱為主，加入華語念唱元素，節奏明快，表現興奮、激昂的情緒。融合傳統與現代的原創曲調，充滿振奮人心的效果，最後在「齊天大聖」的讚頌喝采聲中，完成強而有力的結局。
