South Coast Chinese Orchestra

The South Coast Chinese Orchestra is dedicated to promoting Asian music through Eastern and Western sounds. Led by conductor Bin He and music director Jiangli Yu, the orchestra performs original compositions that blend the distinctive tones of traditional Chinese instruments such as the erhu, pipa and guzheng with Western strings, winds and percussion.
Founded by the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center in Southern California, the orchestra brings together musicians of all backgrounds and ages creating a diverse multi-generational community united by a shared passion for music and cultural storytelling. Its performances reflect a commitment to both preserving and reimagining Chinese musical traditions for contemporary audiences.
The orchestra has become known for its original large-scale productions that integrate music with visual and performing arts. In 2019, the orchestra debuted at the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall with Mulan. They returned to the same stage in 2023 with The Monkey King. In 2024, the South Coast Chinese Orchestra embarked on its first musical, an original composition by Bin He - LEGENDS - at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. The musical included stories of Nezha, Mulan and the Monkey King and was a bold fusion of Chinese folklore, symphonic music, martial arts, and dance.
Each season, the South Coast Chinese Orchestra continues to expand its reach and impact, offering audiences across Southern California a truly unique musical experience—one that celebrates cultural exchange and the evolving legacy of Asian music in the modern world.
