Charles Wu, a sophomore at Beckman High School, led Team Swift to a runner-up finish in the West Coast Professional Division of STEM Racing.

With support from the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center and Irvine Valley College, the team will compete in the National Finals this April in North Carolina, aiming to represent the U.S. globally.

Passionate about engineering, Wu co-founded Team Swift after discovering STEM Racing, formerly F1 in Schools, a global competition backed by Formula 1 and the FIA.

Launched in the UK in 1999 and expanded to the U.S. in 2005, the program now engages over 100,000 students from 58 countries annually.

The competition challenges teams to design, build, and race miniature F1 cars using 3D CAD, CNC milling, and CO₂ propulsion. Teams also develop branding, pitch business plans, and secure corporate sponsors.

As team manager and design engineer, Wu led Team Swift to win Best Presentation and place second overall.

Their 1.2-second race car ranks as the second-fastest in the U.S. Wu also innovated a custom CNC mold fixture and a 3D-printed spray stand for precision finishing.

“Our team worked tirelessly to optimize both engineering and business strategies,” Wu said.

“Winning runner-up and Best Presentation was a proud moment, and we’re excited to bring our innovations to Nationals.”

To secure sponsorships, Wu reached out to Yulan Chung, CEO of the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center, who provided a tax-exempt donation account to help the team attract funding.

Irvine Valley College also contributed advanced CNC equipment and technical mentorship, boosting their capabilities.

Wu’s mother, Eva, credited his passion for cars and seven years of Chinese studies at Irvine Chinese School for shaping his creativity and leadership.

“The school’s encouragement of self-expression helped Charles embrace challenges,” she said.

“I’m grateful for his teachers and the cultural center’s support, which helped him lead his team to success.”

The STEM Racing National Finals will be held April 7-9 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Backed by strong community support, Team Swift is determined to secure a spot on the global stage.
