The origin of AAPI Heritage Month can be traced back to the early 1970s when some Asian American organizations and activists began calling for broader recognition and celebration of the contributions and culture of Asian Americans. In 1977, Senator Daniel Inouye of Illinois introduced a bill proposing May to be designated as a month to showcase the traditional cultures and contributions of Asian Pacific Americans. The bill was passed in 1978, becoming federal law, and began to be celebrated nationwide.

Since then, May of each year has been designated as AAPI Heritage Month to commemorate and celebrate the importance of Asian Pacific Americans and Pacific Islanders in American history and culture. This month encompasses various groups from diverse Asian Pacific backgrounds, including but not limited to Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, Indian, and Native Hawaiian. During this month, various activities are organized, including cultural exhibitions, artistic performances, forums, lectures, and community service projects, to highlight the achievements and contributions of Asian Pacific Americans and promote understanding and unity among diverse cultures.

The establishment of AAPI Heritage Month aims to raise awareness and understanding of the AAPI community, promote its cultural values and historical contributions, and foster social inclusion and diversity. Overall, the origin of AAPI Heritage Month reflects respect and recognition for the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, as well as acknowledgment of their significant position in American society. This month provides an opportunity for people to learn about and appreciate the diversity and uniqueness of the AAPI community, and advocates for the establishment of a more inclusive and diverse social environment.

AAPI heritage Month
