Gene Wie, past Music Conductor (2005-2020)

Community Youth Orchestra of Southern California is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that presents innovative music education programs to serve students of all ages and ability levels, engages musicians in meaningful community service through mentorship, and fosters a positive collaborative environment for musicmaking that strives to unite people from many diverse backgrounds, identities, and experiences. Founded in 1990 by Robert Lau and directed for the past fifteen seasons by Gene Wie, the orchestra has been a contributing member to the cultural life of the City of Irvine for three decades.

Engaging in artistic partnerships with organizations like the Irvine Barclay Theatre, Master Chorale of Saddleback Valley, Orange County Children’s Theater, The Arts at St. Margaret’s, and the Irvine Chinese School and South Coast Chinese Cultural Association, we are thrilled to celebrate our 30th anniversary in the 2020-2021 season.

The program currently involves over one hundred and fifty students each year in four major performing groups including the Academy Program for grades Pre/ K-4, two intermediate string groups, the Sinfonietta (Elementary) and Sinfonia (Middle School), and our flagship ensemble, the Symphony which involves a diverse population of students from throughout the Irvine Unified School District as well as over a dozen other school districts in the Orange County area. Committed to accessible music education, our yearly tuition is heavily subsidized through the tireless efforts of parent volunteers and generous donors that have empowered CYOSC to create an instrument loan program for double bass and percussion, support public school teachers working with impacted communities in orchestral music, and develop a leading Community Service Program (CSP) for education outreach. The CSP provides high school volunteers with mentoring by our teaching artists in training the next generation of instrumental musicians in our Academy Program.
