Do you know the word moorhen? On June 2, a 14 years old girl, the speller 231 Harini Logan won the 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee via the first Spell-off in Bee history. Her winning word, the final word she spelled correctly during the Spell-off, was "moorhen”.
According to the official website, “Our purpose is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.” The Competition has a 90 years history, and it is definitely still going strong. The make-up of the spellers on any level of the competition, local, state and national, has become more and more diverse.
There are 105 girls, 128 boys and one transgender contestant this year.
A couple of fun facts about Spelling Bee: the bee is run on a not-for-profit basis by The E. W. Scripps Company and is held at a hotel or convention center in Washington, D.C. during the week following Memorial Day weekend. Contest participants cannot be older than fourteen as of August 31 of the year before the competition; nor can they be past the eighth grade as of February 1 of that year's competition.
