The dragon dance is a form of traditional dance and performance in Chinese culture. Like the lion dance it is most often seen in Lunar New Year and festive celebrations. In Chinese culture, dragons symbolize wisdom, power, dignity, fertility, and auspiciousness, and have also become a symbol of Chinese culture itself. Chinese people often use the term "Descendants of the Dragon" to signify ethnic identity.

The South Coast Chinese Cultural Center started a dragon dance team in 2015. The center has since maintained several 60-foot-long dragons for performance and display. If you look carefully, you might find one of these magnificent dragons on display somewhere in the Center.

Our dragon team comprises 10 dragon dancers and several alternates. The dragon dancers must carefully coordinate their movements and manipulate the dragon’s body to give the illusion of it moving on its own. Traditionally dragon dance is performed by martial artists. Thus our Wushu coach also leads the dragon dance team.

Last weekend the dragon dance team was spotted practicing their new moves in the Mar Amphitheater. It’s spectacular to watch the dragon chasing the giant pearl in various directions. The dragon dance team will be featured during our Year of Rabbit Lunar New Year Celebration on Jan 21st and 22nd.
