The 2nd annual Asian American Youth Leaders summer program is held at South Coast Chinese Cultural Center from June 26 to June 30. 18 participants are selected from varied high schools from all over the Orange County this year. The program instructors include UCI graduate student Chenglin Lee, undergraduate student Jonny Vu and high schooler Abigail Shi. They bring unique perspectives to lead and enrich the discussion sessions.

This year’s session topics include Asian American identity, mental health, Asian Americans in Orange County and advocating for the community. Guest speakers are Diana Chao who found a non-profit organization to support youth mental health through writing and Dr. Judy Wu, professor of history and Asian American Studies at UC Irvine.

During the five sessions, students attend college-level seminars developed to introduce the histories, politics, literature, and art of Asian American communities. Daily activities include but are not limited to discussions, small-group work, and workshops by invited guest speakers.

The Asian American Youth Leaders is a youth leadership program developed in partnership between the South Coast Chinese Cultural Association (SCCCA) in Irvine and the Humanities Center at the University of California Irvine.
