This year, the South Coast Chinese Drum Team will participate in the OC Lantern Festival. Under the leadership of Mr. He Bin and Ms. Yu Jiangli, the South Coast Chinese Orchestra and South Coast Chinese Drum Team premiered the original musical composition "Mulan" in 2019. This production seamlessly integrates elements of both Eastern and Western music, choir, dance, recitation, and animation, leaving the entire audience deeply moved. Following the performance, the audience rose to their feet in applause, marveling at the performance of this native American ensemble.

In 2023, they presented "The Monkey King," a production that combines traditional Chinese instruments, Western string music, Chinese traditional dance, and martial arts, offering a fresh interpretation of the legendary figure, the Monkey King. This performance attracted many music enthusiasts and supporters of Chinese traditional culture.

At this year's Lantern Festival, they will perform well-known and moving pieces, while also previewing their upcoming work, "Nezha." This promises to provide the audience with a completely new auditory experience, one that should not be missed!

Nezha is one of the four themes of the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center, representing "loyalty, courage, filial piety, and righteousness." Filial piety is embodied by "Mulan", courage by "The Monkey King", and this time they will introduce "Nezha", symbolizing "righteousness."

About Lantern Festival

Pacific Symphony and South Coast Chinese Cultural Center join in presenting this free family-friendly festival to commemorate the end of the Lunar New Year celebration with music, dance, art making, riddles, and food. The concert hall lobby becomes transformed for the festivities with floating lanterns and the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall is opened up to the public for performances featuring local music and dance groups. The event draws thousands of people from Orange County and beyond for this festive celebration of arts and culture.

The event’s crescendo is a dragon dance that weaves its way through the crowds—a dance of power and prosperity. No tickets are required for the outdoor revelry, but remember, the concert hall’s embrace is limited by its walls. Entry is first-come, first-served, so arrive with tickets in hand—available for every family member—to ensure your spot in this cultural mosaic.
