As May approaches, the United States will welcome AAPI Heritage Month, celebrating the history and culture of Asian Americans. This is an important time aimed at commemorating and honoring the significant contributions of Asian Americans to the history, culture, and society of the United States.
Speaking of Asian Americans, we cannot ignore the AAPI community in Orange County. With a population of 3.15 million residents spread across 34 cities (as of July 2022), Orange County boasts 750,000 Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) residents. Among these cities, only 6 have AAPI populations of less than 10%. Irvine leads with 134,000 AAPI residents, making it the largest in the county. Of Irvine's 313,000 residents, over 43% are of Asian descent, making Asians the largest ethnic group in the city. The South Coast Chinese Cultural Center is also located in Irvine.
AAPI Heritage Month originates from a long and poignant history. In the 19th century, a large number of Asian immigrants arrived on American soil, working tirelessly to build the nation despite facing exclusion, discrimination, and injustice. Nonetheless, through relentless effort and perseverance, Asian Americans gradually earned their place in American society and achieved remarkable success in various fields. During AAPI Heritage Month, celebrations will be held across the United States in various forms, including cultural exhibitions, artistic performances, and academic seminars, aiming to promote the history, culture, and values of Asian Americans. In addition, the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center will actively participate by organizing a variety of colorful activities to provide deeper understanding and engagement for the local community.
