On April 13th, at 2 p.m., the Asian American Youth Leadership (AAYL) of the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center (SCCCA) held a remarkable community event, showcasing their year-long efforts. The theme of the event, "Focus," was organized by Lauryn Chew, an outstanding student leader from Northwood High School.
AAYL is a youth organization established by the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center in the aftermath of the pandemic. Under the leadership of Dr. Judy Wu, Associate Dean of the School of Humanities at UCI, Dr. Tony Hwang, Executive Director of the Office of Enrollment Management, and doctoral student Mary Nguyen, they have focused on the entire Asian American community. AAYL aims to cultivate the next generation of Asian American leaders, hoping they will engage in dialogue, research fair and just solutions to social challenges and needs in American society. Furthermore, AAYL encourages active participation of Asian Americans in civic activities and actively fosters the leadership skills necessary for societal change. Moreover, AAYL has increased awareness within the Asian American community about the extensive immigration history of Asian ethnic and cultural groups. These efforts subtly strengthen and promote the contributions of Asian Americans to American society. Simultaneously, while engaging in various interactions within the community, AAYL has gradually utilized its influence to mitigate some of the anti-Asian hate and discrimination in American society.
As the recipient of the AAYL Community Engagement Fellowship, Lauryn successfully led twelve high school students of her age in exploring topics such as race, xenophobia, class, gender, and age through the "Focus" program. Utilizing methods like Photovoice, they vividly presented impactful stories. The event was attended by leaders and teachers from SCCCA, as well as Mayor Farrah Khan and Councilwoman Tammy Kim from the City of Irvine, who celebrated the achievements. The event showcased the exceptional work of AAYL students, providing them a vibrant platform to demonstrate their talents and engage with the community, fostering positive energy and inspiration.
Please visit for the students perfect work.
Bringing Youth Stories Into Focus
4月13日,下午2點,南海岸華文化中心的AAYL(Asian American Youth Leadership)舉辦了一場別開生面的社區活動,展示了他們一年來的努力成果。
在UCI Associate Dean, School of Humanities Dr. Judy Wu和Executive Director Office of Enrollment Management Dr. Tony Hwang以及博士生Mary Nguyen的帶領下,他們將關注點投放在全體亞裔美國人身上。
