Last Friday night, the Mid-Autumn Festival, hosted by the City of Irvine and the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center, took place at Irvine Great Park, attracting more than 15,000 attendees. The event featured a lively atmosphere with night market games, cultural showcases, and a variety of food stalls.

The night market area was filled with popular game booths such as ring toss, pinball, fishing, and bean bag toss, drawing many families to participate. In an effort to promote Chinese culture, there were interactive booths where visitors could try on traditional Hanfu clothing, paint dyed fans, and weave handicrafts, giving participants a hands-on experience of Chinese craftsmanship. Additionally, the night market food stalls offered a wide array of traditional snacks, providing a delicious treat for all.

In a gesture of cultural inclusivity, the event also invited other ethnic groups that celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival to join the festivities and set up booths, showcasing their unique traditions. The performances on stage were a highlight of the evening, beginning with a captivating martial arts demonstration by the South Coast Wushu Team, followed by folk dance performances from the Chinese Dance Company of Southern California, traditional Chinese music from the South Coast Chinese Orchestra, and an impressive diabolo performance by Irvine Chinese School’s Yo Yo Team, all of which received enthusiastic applause from the audience.

Irvine’s mayor, vice mayor, and city council members were invited on stage to join in the dancing, adding to the joyful atmosphere of the night. A special performance by the Los Angeles Yue Opera Troupe, which presented traditional Yue opera scenes, delighted the crowd, as many were thrilled to see such an authentic performance in the U.S.

A lantern tunnel was illuminated at night, becoming a hotspot for photo ops, as many attendees wore traditional clothing from their own cultures and eagerly took photos under the glowing lanterns. The entire event was filled with joy and warmth, highlighting the beauty of multicultural exchange and festive celebration.
