Hosted by the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center, the "Fan Painting Workshop" took place in the center's multifunctional classroom on the second floor. Participants not only listened to the instructor's introduction to the four treasures of the study and traditional Chinese ink painting but also learned how to depict the "Four Gentlemen" (plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum) on fan surfaces.
The workshop attracted participants of all ages, from young to old. Invited by the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center, teacher Lan Shih-hao first introduced the history of the four treasures and ink painting in English, showcasing precious artifacts from the Palace Museum. This sparked a deep interest in Chinese cultural treasures among all attendees, creating an enthusiastic atmosphere.
Teacher Lan explained that to paint on a fan surface, one must prepare brush pens, rice paper fan surfaces, ink, and a palette. Fine brushes are suitable for detailing flowers and grasses, while broader brushes are used to outline bamboo stalks. For the plum blossom, the petals are star-shaped; using a fine brush dipped in light ink, one must gently depict the petals, paying attention to the variation in brush pressure to create a natural sense of layering. The branches are then outlined with a fine brush, bending to show the resilience of the plum blossom in winter.
The leaves of orchids are long and elegant. One should lightly draw the shape of the leaves with a brush, adding subtle ink strokes, and then depict the orchid flowers, usually composed of several petals, presenting an elegant posture. Bamboo is characterized by its uprightness and strength. Using a broader brush, one should paint the bamboo stalks from bottom to top, then use a fine brush for the leaves, ensuring they have lively curves to enhance the overall vitality of the painting. Chrysanthemums offer rich layers and colors; one can choose various color combinations, layering the petals with a fine brush before adding green for the leaves, making the artwork more vibrant.
In the past, South Coast Chinese Cultural Center offered various cultural activities for members, such as making sachets and wearing Hanfu, which were very well-received. In this workshop, Fu Mumei, the founding principal of the Irvine Chinese School, also participated. She shared that while painting, she felt a bit nervous, but as the Four Gentlemen gradually took shape, her anxiety transformed into satisfaction. Each stroke allowed her to appreciate the significance and beauty of these plants. Additionally, parents and children collaborated in the activity, fostering a special connection through art.
