At the South Coast Chinese Wushu Team, Coach Xiangjin Kong uses her deep knowledge of martial arts and passion for education to offer her students not just skills, but also an immersion into Chinese culture. As a wushu coach, she has honed her physical and mental strength through Wushu, while also developing her willpower and character.

“Being a wushu coach at the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center is incredibly meaningful,” Coach Kong proudly says. “This is the best platform in California for promoting Wushu.” She hopes to use her skills to help overseas students not only learn professional Wushu techniques but also experience the charm of martial arts culture, thereby contributing to the growth and development of Chinese martial arts abroad.

In the upcoming musical "Legends", Coach Kong faces a unique challenge. She explains that the musical’s Wushu performance section involves numerous characters, and her task is to assign roles to each student based on their personality and characteristics. “For example, there’s a scene that requires many little monkey characters, and initially, my students didn’t quite understand it,” she says with a smile. To guide them, she used games to help the children find joy and inspiration through imitation. During these playful learning moments, she carefully taught them the technical traits of monkeys, such as their hand movements, their energetic expressions, and the characteristic gestures like scratching their heads and bodies.

Coach Kong notes that this performance is a new challenge for her students and an excellent opportunity for them to showcase their talents. Not only will they display their martial arts skills on stage, but they will also integrate more performance elements. Unlike previous shows, which mostly focused on demonstrating martial arts techniques, this time she is blending technique with artistry to bring the audience a feast for the eyes and soul.

“This performance is going to be amazing,” she says with excitement in her voice. “I warmly welcome everyone to join us in the theater and witness this spectacular moment together on the "Legends" musical stage.”
