The musical "Legend" is set to premiere this Saturday, and Jiangli Yu , the artistic director of the South Coast Chinese Orchestra, shares her unique cultural insights into the work's themes and concepts. She is confident that "Legend" will offer audiences an unprecedented experience.
Yu highlights that the musical's most striking feature is the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures, showcasing the beautiful melodies of Chinese music alongside the dynamic rhythms of Western music. This interplay adds depth and layers to the entire production. Her primary focus is to ensure that every aspect of the performance is perfectly represented on stage, from the styles of dance, martial arts, and acrobatics to costume selections, covering nearly every detail.
In Yu’s vision, the presentation of traditional Chinese art is particularly captivating. "In our ensemble of Eastern and Western instruments, we blend Chinese dance, martial arts, and acrobatics. Every movement on stage is filled with creativity and freshness," she says.
"The design of the stage background is also noteworthy," Yu points out. "Legend" will utilize visual elements to enrich the musical experience, creating an immersive environment. She vividly describes a large backdrop that will cover the entire stage, allowing the audience to not only enjoy the harmony of dance and music but also feel a genuine sense of presence.
Despite the large scale of the production, with nearly 300 participants, she remains confident in the team's collaboration. She notes, “We have many new team members, especially children who are participating for the first time. Although they face challenges, the guidance from experienced instructors, along with the strong support from CEO Yulan Chung of the South Coast of Cultural Center, has been invaluable.”
When discussing the challenges faced during production, Yu admits, "This is our first attempt at such a large-scale production. It is a rare experience for every performer, especially since we have both local children and professional American actors involved. The enthusiasm and energy of everyone have made the work even more vibrant." She is optimistic, stating, "This will be a great avenue for cultural exchange."
Yu hopes that through this performance, they can not only showcase Chinese culture but also convey the spirit of teamwork. .
