Conductor Bin He of the South Coast Chinese Orchestra believes that Asian culture is an essential part of American identity that cannot be separated. "Legends," Original Musical, is not only the first Asian-created musical but also a vibrant celebration of Asian virtues.
In "Legends,", three beloved figures from Chinese folklore are showcased, each embodying a unique virtue: Mulan represents filial piety, NeZha stands for justice, and the Monkey King symbolizes courage. These virtues are intricately woven into the themes of the musical.
Discussing the power of storytelling through music, He Bin emphasizes that traditional Chinese instruments possess distinct sounds capable of conveying deep emotions and cultural significance with even a single note. Instruments like the guzheng, erhu, and pipa express rich emotional nuances and cultural differences. To create a more dynamic and diverse musical experience, He Bin has integrated Western string and rock instruments, appealing to younger audiences and bridging traditional Chinese music with contemporary styles.
The performance also features captivating dance, Chinese martial arts, artistic gymnastics, Peking opera, pop opera, and a symphony orchestra composed of musicians from various backgrounds. "Legends," transcends being just a musical; it is a celebration of cultural heritage and artistic collaboration, inviting families to embark on a unique and magical journey together.
