The "Legends" Original Musical premiered to great acclaim. After the show, SCCCC CEO Yulan Chung expressed her gratitude to the audiences and supporters, hoping that through the performing art sharing, cultural boundaries can be crossed and greater understanding of Chinese culture can be fostered, contributing to a harmonious society. Here are the interview highlights :
Q: Can you first please briefly introduce today's event?
Today is the premium for "Legend" to be at the Segestrom Hall. And we are very happy. The reason we are so happy is because in 1987 the first Chinese culture program was presented at this place. And after 37 years, we come back with an original compose by our community member and performed by our community member. So this is really a community project that we have been doing for quite a few years. And the presentation here really want to share our Chinese culture with broader community member.
So that is the our goal, is to kind of use the performing art to bridge different culture and break the boundary of ethnic group.
Q: A lot of the people talk about community today, so what type of performance does the center want to bring to the community?
I think as a Chinese culture center, first of all, we want to preserve our culture heritage and second of all is that we want to share our culture with other people.
And it's because we believe diverse culture is the unique component of the a kind American society and for us to be part of this society we want to contribute with our beautiful Chinese culture.
Q: There were a lot of things going on during the show so can you recall what are some highlights?
We tell three kind of traditional, classical Chinese story, Mulan and also Monkey king NeZha, this is three different story has a different virtue associated with it.
For Mulan, we associate with how the love between the parents and the children, and how the children can do anything everything that for their loved one.
And for the Monkey King, we are doing this story basically to encourage or to showcase the courage that character has.
For NeZha is that through the story you can see how justice can be reached if everybody works together.
Q: More details like in an actual form. What type of performance does the center prepare?
Oh right now i think a lot of people realize we have our own Chinese orchestra. This is a full scale orchestra today. we have 87 member present on the stage and with the original composed music piece by our conductor. And we also have our Chinese folk dance company, this is a Chinese folk dance that showcase different story with the dance support. and we also have a Chinese martial arts team which is Wushu, and this Wushu also support a lot of element if we want to have a more physical art form then that would do it. And lastly is the gymnastic, we do have a gymnastic team at our gym to practice gymnastic regularly and so we incorporate a lot into the production as well.
Q:We all know that how much effort the center, and everyone has put into this show. so how did the center prepare for this show including all the staff, teachers and students. How did you prepare for today's performance?
I think this project since we have been doing this during the pandemic. I think pandemic is really a weakening call for many of our community members. Is because the Asian hate crime. We realize we don't want to just stand on the street hold the signs "stop the heat". We realize we need to reach out to other people, to let them understand our culture. And the cultural multicultural harmony is really the key by through this different culture sharing and understanding. And for us as a Chinese culture center, I think that is the thing that we can do and the community really need it .
Q: What inspired the center to organize and participate?
I think I can go through the other way to explain it. For a lot of people they immigrant to America is because they have an American dream. And what American dream is composed by three elements, is freedom, democracy and diversity. As a Chinese culture center, we can contribute to the society by the cultural diversity. And for our community program, so many student participant or member that is their dream and wish too. They want to be part of this American society, they want to contribute through their art talents that people understand what Chinese culture is about.
Q: Finally any final thoughts or words after today's performance anything you want to share?
On behalf of the production team, we're really great to see our hard work, and very well accepted by the audience, and we can also receive the feedback from the audience. We realize this is really what community really want to see. You can share the culture through different performing arts format.
No matter what kind format, your community has. you can share that, and through this type of sharing, I think more and more cultural understanding will come across the cultural boundary and that is we are all very exciting for.
