Is the security situation in Irvine really better?

A "Community Policing Forum" for Chinese residents will take place on November 16 at the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center. Chief of Police Michael Kent will present updates on public safety, joined by leaders from various departments to address pre-submitted questions and take live inquiries from attendees. Residents are encouraged to participate.

This event is organized by the SCCCC and the Irvine Police Department. CEO YuLan Chung of the SCCCC noted that over 40% of Irvine’s population is Asian, with many concerned about community safety. The forum offers a rare opportunity for direct engagement with police.

To streamline discussions, a   QR code  on the event flyer allows attendees to submit safety questions by November 10. Participants will receive a portable safety flashlight (while supplies last), and an electronic safety guide will be sent out afterward to help residents stay secure at home, school, work, and in public.

According to FBI statistics, Irvine has been ranked one of the safest cities in the U.S. for 19 consecutive years. However, growing concerns about traffic and safety issues have become central topics in the upcoming elections.

Irvine Police Spokesperson Karie Davies emphasized that the city’s development has attracted many top companies, leading to a population surge of over 338,000. While the community enjoys these benefits, challenges related to traffic and public safety are increasing. The department has 260 officers dedicated to safety, employing technology and community support to build trust and ensure safety for all.

The forum will feature bilingual officers providing translations and answering questions in Mandarin. Topics will include traffic safety, theft prevention, violence, gun control, drug issues, and financial and home safety. The aim is to inform residents about police resources and foster collaboration for community safety.

The "Community Policing Forum" is set for Saturday, November 16, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center’s Amphitheater, located at 9 Truman, Irvine, CA 92620.

Karie Davies

9 Truman, Irvine, CA 92620
