Nine-in-one elections including the Irvine mayor, city councilors, school districts, etc. and the California proposal vote will be held simultaneously on November 5th. In addition to the presidential election, this year Irvine the election for mayor and city councilors has become more tense due to the large number of candidates.
The South Coast Chinese Cultural Center, known for its promotion of Chinese language education and cultural arts courses, has become a bustling hub for campaign activities, with numerous candidate billboards filling the area outside its entrance.
This year's Irvine mayoral election features seven candidates—a rise from five in 2022—while a total of 15 candidates have registered for the city council across four districts, up from just six two years ago, indicating fierce competition.
In the mayoral race, the current mayor, Farrah Khan, will not seek re-election. Among the seven candidates, two are of Asian descent: Lee Sun and Wing Chow. Current Vice Mayor Larry Agran and city council member Tammy Kim are also running.
For the city council elections, the city was divided into four districts for the first time this year. The first district has a two-year term, while the other three have four-year terms. Among the 15 candidates, five are Asian: Jackie Kan and Melinda Liu in the first district, Gang Chen and William Gao in the second, and Jing Sun in the third.
Candidates have presented their platforms addressing key issues such as public safety, environmental protection, affordable housing, and traffic improvement. These topics resonate strongly with nearly all mayoral and council candidates. To learn more about the candidates' platforms, the SCCCC has published a special voter guide.
In addition to the Irvine mayoral and city council elections, November 5 will also feature elections for the U.S. President and Vice President, federal and state representatives, school board members, and Orange County municipal water district directors, and California will have ten propositions up for approval or rejection. (For details on the propositions, please refer to the list below.)
In preparation for the election, the SCCCC collaborated with various nonprofit organizations, hosted “MEET THE IRVINE CANDIDATE FORUM” after candidate registration. The event attracted a large turnout, with most candidates in attendance presenting their platforms to engaged citizens.
As voting is set to conclude on November 5, Yulan Chung ,CEO of the SCCCC, expressed the center's commitment to promoting Chinese culture and encouraging Asian voters to participate actively in the election. She hopes that elected officials will prioritize the voices of the Asian community in education, public safety, and economic policy-making.
