Is the security situation in Irvine really better?
A special "Police-Community Forum" for Chinese-speaking residents will be held on Saturday, November 16, at the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center. The event will cover local crime trends, safety tips, and provide a chance for the community to engage with the Irvine Police Department.
Irvine Police Chief Michael Kent will discuss the city’s safety, share tips on reporting crimes, and answer questions from the community. Police leaders from various departments will also attend.Plus, the first Tesla CyberTruck police vehicle in the U.S. will be on display for public viewing.
This forum is co-hosted by the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center and the Irvine Police Department. With over 40% of Irvine’s population being of Asian descent, including a large Chinese community, residents are particularly concerned about public safety.
At the forum, Chief Kent and other police officials will meet with the community, answer questions, and discuss how to improve safety. The public is encouraged to attend and ask questions in person.
Attendees will receive a free handheld flashlight (while supplies last), and the Cultural Center will provide an electronic safety guide to help residents stay safe at home, school, work, or while out.
According to FBI data, Irvine has been ranked one of the safest cities in the U.S. for 19 years in a row. However, with rapid population growth, concerns about traffic and safety have increased, and these issues are now central to the current mayor and city council campaigns.
Karie Davies, a spokesperson for the Irvine Police Department, noted that Irvine’s well-planned development has attracted many top companies, pushing the city’s population to over 338,000. While the city thrives, challenges like traffic and police staffing have grown. The Irvine Police Department currently has 260 officers working to keep the city safe, and Davies emphasized that community involvement is key to maintaining that safety.
The forum will include Chinese-speaking officers for translation, and discussions will cover topics such as traffic safety, theft prevention, violent crime, financial scams, and online safety. The goal is to inform the community about police resources and build stronger collaboration to prevent crime.
The Police-Community Forum will take place on Saturday, November 16, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center’s Amphitheater, located at 9 Truman, Irvine, CA 92620.
