On November 16, at a community safety forum organized by the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center and Irvine Police Department , Chief of Police Michael Kent announced plans to increase the number of Chinese-speaking officers to ensure the safety of Chinese residents.
In addition to offering Chinese translation services for residents reporting incidents, the police department will also actively recruit Chinese officers. Those interested in joining the police force and contributing to the safety of the community are encouraged to apply via the city's police department website.
The "Face-to-Face with the Police" community safety forum, held at the SCCCC's Amphitheater, attracted numerous community representatives and residents. The event was lively and well-attended.
Irvine's current Vice Mayor and newly elected Mayor Larry Agran expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to speak at this event specifically targeting the Chinese community. He emphasized that, with the high percentage of Chinese residents in Irvine, ensuring their safety is the shared responsibility of the city government and the police department.
Irvine City Council member Tammy Kim also highlighted her strong support for hiring more Asian Pacific Islander officers and for establishing an Asian hate crime reporting hotline in the city.

YuLan Chung, The CEO of the SCCCC, pointed out that community safety has always been a top concern for Chinese residents. She noted that, from the "Tea with Chief" event in 2014 to the 2024 "Community Safety Town Hall," the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center and the Irvine Police Department have been working together for more than ten years to address safety issues.
This event, with the participation of the newly elected Mayor, Chief of Police, and several Chinese officers, demonstrates the city's and police department's commitment to ensuring the safety of the Chinese community. She hopes that this forum will strengthen the "watchful neighbors" platform, helping to address community safety concerns.

During the event, Chief Kent, with the help of Chinese-speaking officers, gave a presentation to the attendees. He introduced the various divisions within the police department and shared statistics and videos about policing priorities and current crime trends.
Regarding the safety concerns gathered in advance from the community, including issues such as reckless electric bike riding, ongoing package thefts, home burglaries, and robberies, the police responded with several measures.
These include enhancing enforcement and confiscation efforts, encouraging the installation of outdoor surveillance equipment, and advising residents not to leave house keys or remote controls in their vehicles. The event also featured the display of the first-ever Tesla CyberTruck police vehicle in the U.S. This eye-catching CyberTruck attracted many families, with parents and children taking pictures alongside the officers and the vehicle.
