Invited by the South Coast Chinese Cultural Association, the Irvine Chinese Chorus hosted the Community Folk Song & Ballad Festival at the SCCCC's MAR AMPHITHEATER on December 14.
This was the first time five choirs — the Irvine Chinese Chorus, Orange County Lady’s Chorus, American Feel Young, Laguna Woods Village Taiwanese Choir and Korean Master Chorale — performed together in the same venue, showcasing their unique styles with different songs, vocal techniques, and interpretations.
Their heavenly voices touched the hearts of the audience, and the brilliant performances earned thunderous applause from the packed crowd.
In her welcoming speech, Yulan Chung, CEO of the SCCCC shared that post-pandemic, cultural events like this one play a key role in eliminating anti-Asian sentiment, and that music is the most powerful way to bring everyone together for a better future.
She was pleased that five choirs, including the Korean choir, could participate, and thanked the community for their enthusiastic support.
She also extended special thanks to Dr. Nelson and Sarah Mar for their generous donation of the MAR AMPHITHEATER, which has made many cultural events, including this concert, benefiting the entire community.
Last weekend, the SCCCC had a spectacular event. Under the guidance of current conductor, Mr. Sam Sun, the five choirs — Irvine Chinese Chorus, Orange County Lady’s Chorus, American Feel Young, Laguna Woods Village Taiwanese Choir and Orange County Korean Master Chorale — gathered at the MAR AMPHITHEATER.
On a sunny afternoon, each choir performed a variety of beautiful songs, with their male and female voices blending harmoniously.
The Korean Master Chorale, in addition to their singing, incorporated unique hand gestures and movements in their performance, adding a dynamic visual element.
The audience enjoyed a rare and delightful musical feast, fully immersing themselves in the experience.
After the performance, a group photo was taken, including Mike Chen, Former President of the South Coast Chinese Cultural Association, Yulan Chung, CEO of the SCCCC, Conductor, Mr. Sam Sun, and all the choir members, capturing a historic moment.
According to the co-presidents of the Irvine Chinese Chorus, Wen Liang and Paul Huang, they are grateful to the SCCCC and to Mr. Sam Sun for their support in building a multicultural platform for artistic expression.
This concert not only allowed the Irvine Chinese Chorus to collaborate and learn from the other four choirs but also gave the community the opportunity to experience a rich variety of folk songs and ballads from Taiwan, China, United States and Korean, blending traditional melodies with contemporary rhythms.
