The 2024 Irvine Chinese School "Write and Draw Life" Poster Contest has successfully concluded.

Guided by their teachers, students further learned how to use Chinese for marketing and complimenting peers, while also experiencing the spirit of democracy through voting.

Irvine Chinese School holds an annual Fall Academic Promotion event, encouraging students to express themselves and illustrate their lives in Chinese.

This time’s theme, "Impressions of Life," involved students creating posters through a combination of handwriting, illustration, and graphic design, after the teacher introduced the topic in class.

High school students were required to write a story, summary, and reflections in Chinese, and design a poster that would attract others to view it.

To increase participation, the school allowed teachers, students, and parents to vote for their favorite posters, fostering a learning and sharing experience.

Teacher Leah Huang, who designed the activity, mentioned that the "Write and Draw Life" theme was tailored to different age groups and Chinese proficiency levels, covering topics like birthday parties, food, travel, and movie posters.

Students presented their works in Chinese in class, and those selected for exhibition had to campaign for votes.

Students enthusiastically introduced their creative ideas and discussed their stories and reflections, showcasing their creativity.

Besides presenting their own work, students also had to explain in Chinese why they liked certain posters, increasing their aesthetic judgment and language skills.

Teachers guided students through various interactive discussions, making learning Chinese fun and enriching.

The event, which included voting from across different classes and external parents, became a lively and engaging activity, with many parents bringing friends and family to support their children.

School principal Jenffier Su emphasized that this activity aimed to move beyond textbook learning by helping students express their ideas in Chinese, build confidence, and experience the democratic process.

Parents’ involvement also allowed them to witness their children’s progress and learn how to share, market, and compliment their peers.

The "Write and Draw Life" poster voting has ended. Results and awards will be announced at the school's Chinese New Year event on 1/25-1/26.
