The original musical "Legends," meticulously curated by the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center, premiered in Segerstrom Hall last October.
Fusing traditional Chinese music with Western strings, and blending rock, pop, classical dance, martial arts, and acrobatics, the production vividly portrays legendary figures like Hua Mulan, the Monkey King, and Nezha.
It not only showcases their emotional depth and wisdom but also conveys the virtues and strength inherent in Asian cultures.
This immersive experience earned a standing ovation and amazed Segerstrom Hall staff. As a result, they invited the "Legends" team to perform a special show for Asian American Heritage Month, showcasing the richness and diversity of Asian culture.
According to Bin He, the conductor and composer behind this unique performance, the "Ode to Motherhood" special show on May 11th, Mother's Day, will open with a series of heartfelt gratitude songs and original compositions.
From the classic "The Best Mom in the World" to the Western original "It Is Because of You," the performance blends Eastern subtlety with Western warmth, letting the audience feel the depth of maternal love through music.
On the day of the performance, Segerstrom Hall's stage will transform into a timeless storytelling space, showcasing Nezha's fighting spirit, the Monkey King's bravery, and Mulan's loyalty.
The story unfolds through the warmest dialogues between mother and child, connecting "Legends" with maternal love.
Bin He notes that this year’s "Legends" 2.0 features upgraded music, tap dancers, Shaolin drunken boxing, and aerialists, along with new visuals, costumes, and cast, promising a breathtaking and emotional experience.
Yulan Chung,CEO of the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center, points out that 2025 marks the center’s 20th anniversary.
She credits the support and care from the community, likening the Chinese community to a mother, quietly supporting and nurturing the center’s growth.
