At the 17th Golden State Wushu Championships in San Jose, all three Huang siblings from South Coast Wushu were selected for Team USA. Ten-year-old Denny Huang earned the All-Around Award, beating over 200 competitors.
The Huang siblings also advanced through the North America regional round of CCTV’s national youth arts competition.
With Bernie’s suona talent and their Wushu skills, they will compete in the finals this July at Beijing’s Star Avenue studio. Coach Becky Kong is preparing them intensively for the national stage.

The Golden State International Wushu Championships, the largest of its kind in the U.S., featured 1,608 athletes from 91 teams.Held in San Jose and sanctioned by USAWKF, the May 24 event drew over 3,000 attendees.

Events ranged from modern and traditional hand forms to soft weapons, qigong, sparring, and group routines, with participants divided into 11 age categories from under 6 to over 66.

South Coast Chinese Cultural Center’s 19-member “Kong Dragon Team” earned 27 gold, 9 silver, 12 bronze medals, and two All-Around Awards—impressing both coaches and parents.
Huang siblings Bernie (13), Denny (10), and Dory (7) won multiple medals in weapons and hand forms, all earning spots on Team USA. Denny placed 3rd All-Around among 200+ in the 9–10 age group.

Their mother, Jingjing He, said Bernie started Wushu in 2nd grade and inspired his siblings after the family moved from Silicon Valley to Irvine and joined South Coast Wushu.

She said Wushu built Children’s strength, discipline, and focus—Bernie even completed a 108 km desert trek. Father Jimmy Huang praised their confidence and thanked Coach Becky Kong and assistant Lareina for their guidance.
The Huang siblings also love music—Bernie plays suona, Denny the flute, and Dory the yangqin. After passing CCTV’s regional audition in L.A., they’ll perform in the finals this July in Beijing.
Coach Becky Kong said the competition was about more than skills—it showcased focus, courage, and growth. She thanked the students for their dedication and the parents for their support.
