The South Coast Chinese Wushu Team brought home an impressive 48 medals—including 27 gold, 9 silver, 12 bronze, and 2 overall excellence awards—at the 17th Golden State International Wushu Championships.

To celebrate their outstanding achievement, the team hosted a recognition event on June 1 at the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center (SCCCC), where students performed their award-winning routines and expressed heartfelt thanks to their coaches and families.

One of the event’s highlights was a special performance by national team selectee Bernie Huang, who amazed the audience with a lively suona solo blended seamlessly with realistic vocal sound effects.

His unique fusion of traditional music and vocal artistry created a mini “sound theatre” that earned enthusiastic applause.

SCCCC CEO Yulan Chung praised the students’ dedication, noting that pursuing wushu in the U.S. poses challenges for both children and their parents.

“Their perseverance and achievements are truly admirable,” she said, expressing gratitude to Coach Becky Kong, Assistant Coach Lareina, and all the supportive parents who made the journey possible.

This year, 19 students represented the team, impressing judges with strong fundamentals and consistent performance.

Parents also shared their appreciation. Jingjing He, mother of three national team selectees, thanked SCCCC for providing a safe and encouraging environment for her children to grow.

Parent Alina highlighted the coaches’ thoughtful preparation—including attention to attire and presentation—and encouraged fellow parents to serve as the team’s “support crew.”

Another parent noted the coaches’ unwavering support throughout the lengthy competition days, from pre-event makeup to warm-ups, expressing confidence in the children’s continued growth.

The event concluded with Bernie Huang’s standout performance and a cheerful group photo session, wrapping up a day of pride, unity, and joyful celebration.
