Editor’s Note :
As the South Coast Chinese Cultural Association and Irvine Chinese School near their 50th anniversary, a special editorial team is collecting reflections from former presidents and principals to preserve this half-century journey.
Cultural Express launches the “Brilliant Fifty” series, featuring selected essays that illuminate the people and stories that shaped our community.
Since joining the Board in 2017 and serving as Chair in 2023–2024, I have been honored to witness and contribute to the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center’s growth from a heritage school into a vibrant cultural hub serving the wider community.
Strong Foundations · Renewed Spaces
As part of the Construction Committee, I helped oversee projects such as the renovation of the Amphitheater and Chinese Garden, improvements at the 10 Truman facility, and the remodeling of classrooms into early childhood spaces.
The newly covered Amphitheater, in particular, has greatly increased its use as an important venue for community gatherings.
Wushu Heritage · Stage Brilliance
Passionate about Chinese martial arts, I also helped establish the South Coast Wushu Team in support of the original musical Legends.
This not only gave young people the opportunity to shine on stage but also marked a new step in integrating arts and cultural heritage.
The debut of Legends at Segerstrom Hall in 2024 further highlighted the Center’s role in sharing Chinese culture with broader audiences.

Over the years, I have witnessed the Center’s steady growth—expanding beyond its role as a Chinese language school to becoming a cultural hub deeply engaged with the community and serving diverse populations.
The establishment of the Irvine Chinese Immersion Academy, as well as the successful debut of the original musical Legends at Segerstrom Hall in October 2024, both exemplify how the Center continues to share the richness and vitality of Chinese culture with broader audiences.

Community Roots · Shared Future
Serving on the Board has been both a privilege and a journey of growth.
On this 50th anniversary, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the many board members, volunteers, and community supporters whose dedication has shaped the Center’s past and future.
May it continue to be a proud home of “Heritage, Development, and Integration” for generations to come.(Brilliant Fifty XXVIII)
