The South Coast Chinese Cultural Center and Irvine Valley College’s English Language Center are offering two free adult English classes this fall to help local residents build practical language skills.

The tuition-free courses focus on two key needs: communicating with schools and preparing for U.S. citizenship.

They provide immigrant and Chinese-speaking families with useful English for education and everyday life.

Break Barriers, Grow Together

AESL 523, English for Parents of Elementary Students, is designed for parents of children in kindergarten through sixth grade.

Topics include parent-teacher conferences, school volunteering, the U.S. school system, and home-school communication.

The class helps parents communicate with teachers, follow their children’s progress, and become more involved at school.

Intermediate English is recommended. Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:50 a.m.

Learn Civics, Build Confidence

AESL 513, English for U.S. Citizenship, prepares students for the naturalization interview.

Lessons cover U.S. history and government, civics questions, the N-400 form, and interview English.

Beginners are welcome, and Chinese-language support is available. Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:50 p.m.

Both classes run from August 18 through December 15 at the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center, 9 Truman Street in Irvine.
