The expressiveness of the erhu is second to none. Many have likened the tone of the erhu to that of a human being. Experienced Erhu musicians can mimic bird chirping, horse neighing, frogs croaking and even a race car driver with the Erhu!
The erhu is sometimes known in the Western world as the Chinese violin or a Chinese two-stringed violin.
The erhu is used as a solo instrument as well as in small ensembles and large orchestras. It is the most popular of traditional bowed string instruments used by various ethnic groups of China. As a very versatile instrument, the erhu is used in both traditional and contemporary music arrangements, such as pop, rock and jazz.
The South Coast Chinese Orchestra is invited to demonstrate Chinese instruments, including erhu, at the Irvine Global Village Festival on October 8, 2022. Another chance to catch the sound of erhu will be the annual recital for South Coast Chinese Orchestra on Sunday November 13, 2022, from 11 am to 2 pm.
