Have you seen Top Gun: Maverick? Do you know it has some ties with Irvine, well, El Toro to be exact? Here is one trivial fact about the movie and Irvine. The Pilot training school was once located near El Toro Air station and that Station is now the Great Park in irvine.
According to wikipedia and some movie information sites, the United States Navy Fighter Weapons School was established on March 3, 1969 at Naval Air Station Miramar near San Diego, California.
The 1993 Base Realignment and Closure Commission recommended that Naval Air Station Miramar be transferred to the U.S. Marine Corps due to the same commission recommending the closure of Marine Corps Air Station El Toro and Marine Corps Air Station Tustin. The commission also recommended that TOPGUN be moved to Naval Air Station Fallon in Nevada. In 1996, TOPGUN was moved to Naval Air Station Fallon and integrated into the Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center. The combined program is currently known as the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program. As the designation suggests, the purpose of TOPGUN is to teach fighter pilots dissimilar combat training tactics to bring back to their air wings to teach to other pilots.
While the El Toro Air Station was active, all U.S. Presidents in the post-World War II era landed in Air Force One at this airfield. Following its decommissioning the site was used as a filming location, including the test track for the United States version of the BBC's Top Gear franchise. About 1,300 acres of land originally taken by the air station was converted into a large recreational center, the Orange County Great Park, while the rest was re-zoned for residential and commercial development.
