If you are installing or replacing a balcony or deck, Orange County Fire Authority wants to remind you to use non-combustible materials such metal, masonry, and light-weight concrete for construction to reduce fire danger. In addition, keep the deck surface clear of plant debris, seal gaps between deck and the outside wall of the house ,and choose deck furniture that is fire-resistant.
About patio covers, they can be made from different materials, but only non-combustible or ignition-resistant materials (such as aluminum) will help protect your home during the next wildfire. About vents, they can be entrances for burning embers. Installing ⅛-inch non-combustible, corrosion-resistant metal mesh screens offer the best wildfire protection.
This month’s Ready-Set-Go! Safety reminders focus on taking care of your home’s balconies and decks, vents, and patio covers as well as OCFA’s free home assessment. For additional information on our Ready, Set, Go! Program please visit https://ocfa.org/rsg.
