Peking Opera is one of the important representatives of traditional Chinese opera arts, originating from the Beijing region with a long history and widespread popularity across the nation. It features singing, recitation, acting, and martial arts as its main performance forms, integrating various arts such as dance, music, and poetry, thereby possessing profound artistic value and cultural significance.
A distinctive feature of Peking Opera is its facial makeup, which employs rich colors and unique designs to portray the character traits and emotional depths of different roles.
These can be categorized into several types:
- Positive Role Masks: Such as heroes and gallant characters, often using bright colors and noble lines to convey justice and dignity.
- Negative Role Masks: Such as villains and deceitful characters, characterized by darker colors and sharp lines to highlight cunning and treachery.
- Clown Masks: Representing humorous and comedic roles, usually featuring light or colorful tones and exaggerated lines to depict jovial and lovable characters.
- Female Character Masks: Mainly portraying female roles, with soft and rich colors and delicate lines to showcase beauty and gentleness.

Among them, the Monkey King mask is a classic image in Peking Opera, beloved and highly regarded by audiences. The Monkey King mask vividly portrays the heroic and bold personality of this character. It primarily uses vibrant red as the main color, complemented by golden patterns and black eyelines to depict his fierceness and cunning. The arched eyebrows and sharp eyes express his wit and agility, while the smiling mouth design often reflects his cheerful and straightforward character traits.

Actors wearing the Monkey King mask adeptly use subtle facial expressions and body language to vividly interpret the character's emotions and complexities, leaving a deep impression and understanding among the audience.
The South Coast Chinese Cultural Center, in collaboration with the South Coast Chinese Orchestra and the Chinese Dance Company of Southern California, proudly presents the second installment of the "Legends" trilogy, "Monkey King."
