The Chinese Calligraphy Club of Laguna Woods Village’s Sachet Workshop Filled the Air with Rosemary and Joy on July 8!

This hands-on workshop blended tradition and creativity, as members stitched sachets, threaded joy, and discovered the healing beauty of Chinese culture.

Sachets—once symbols of grace and protection—evolved into Dragon Boat Festival charms, packed with herbs and tied with colorful threads to ward off evil and welcome good fortune.

Today, sachets carry rich cultural meaning—symbols of love, fertility, and good luck—and are popular as charming, practical accessories for cars, phones, and bags.

Back by popular demand, instructor Chia-Lan Chuang returned to lead a DIY sachet workshop at Laguna Woods, after her festive owl and strawberry designs were a hit before the Dragon Boat Festival.

Ms. Chuang shared that sachet-making is growing in popularity for its cultural charm and calming, creative rewards.

She guided members step-by-step with ready-made kits—cutting, filling, and stitching with a single-thread method to spark joy through simple hands-on work.

Though most were first-timers, with Ms. Chuang’s patient help, everyone finished their sachet. Smiles bloomed as members proudly wore their creations and snapped photos to remember the moment.

Secretary Qiu-Lian Zuo shared that the sachet class is part of the club’s new talent series.

More workshops, like scarf and hat weaving, will give members new ways to enjoy Chinese culture beyond calligraphy and painting.

DIY Sachet in 3 Easy Steps :

◆  Step 1: Cut Your Fabric

Cut two matching pieces of fabric (cotton, silk, or velvet) into your desired shape—square, round, or custom. Size depends on how much filling you want inside.

◆  Step 2: Fill It Up

Add a blend of herbs and cotton for fullness. Popular scents include lemongrass, chamomile, clove, patchouli, and calamus.

◆  Step 3: Stitch & Decorate

Sew the edges shut and secure with thread. Add buttons, beads, or charms to personalize your fragrant creation!
