The CHOC Foundation held a ribbon-cutting at Irvine’s Oak Creek Shopping Center to open its first pediatric urgent care center outside the main hospital.

Supported by the medical team and the Tsao Family Foundation’s generous gift, the center will begin offering specialized care for children and families in September.

Visionary Giving, Lasting Legacy

CHOC has long safeguarded children’s health in Southern California, serving thousands each year, but its ER is often overcrowded, causing delays for families with urgent but non-life-threatening needs.

Recognizing this gap, the Tsao Family Foundation funded the creation of the new community-based urgent care center. The Ribbon-Cutting for New Pediatric Urgent Care in Irvine ceremony drew community leaders, medical representatives, families and media to witness this milestone.

Rady Children’s Health President and CEO Kimberly Chavalas Cripe thanked the Tsao Family Foundation, noting its vision and generosity made Irvine’s first pediatric urgent care possible—a model that ensures timely care and sets a new standard for children’s services.

Specialized Care, New Milestone

Anita Sankaran Piskun, VP of Rady’s Primary Care Network, stressed that children need specialized care, noting families once lacked pediatric urgent care and were forced to seek help in unsuitable settings.

She said the new center delivers timely, compassionate care while setting a higher standard for Orange County. She praised the  Tsao Family Foundation for funding and guiding the project from design to completion, showing its commitment to excellence and sustainability.

Family Legacy, Warm Dedication

Janie Tsao, founder of the Tsao Family Foundation and current Board Chair of the South Coast Chinese Cultural Association, attended with his family, saying she was honored to witness CHOC’s first off-campus pediatric urgent care and thanked his daughters-in-law Yeshin,Yvonne, and the CHOC team for making it possible.

Janie emphasized that children are the hope of every family and the future of society. She noted that the new center allows parents to access professional care close to home when urgent needs arise, and encouraged the media to spread awareness so more families can benefit.

Yeshin and Yvonne said the project offers not only more medical resources but also peace of mind for families, earning warm applause for the family’s tradition of philanthropy and community care.

Pediatric Focus, Year-Round Care

Anita Sankaran Piskun said the new urgent care center features a child-friendly design with X-ray and treats common conditions such as sore throats, ear and skin infections, mild gastrointestinal and respiratory issues, plus laceration repair, splinting, and minor injuries.
