Dear Respected Asian American Elders, Would you be willing to share the flavors and culinary traditions from your memories?

The community engagement project, “Taste of Tradition: A Journey Through Asian American Identity,” is funded by the Asian American Youth Leadership Program at the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center and initiated by local high school students.

We are inviting Asian American elders aged 55 and above to participate in oral history interviews. Our goal is to record the recipes and eating habits from the elders’ early lives and to explore the cultural stories, emotional connections, and historical meanings behind these foods.

The Asian American Youth Leadership Program, which is hosted by the South Coast Chinese Cultural Center, is co-directed by Judy Tzu-Chun Wu (Director of the Humanities Center and Professor of Asian American Studies at the University of California, Irvine) and Tony Hwang (Executive Director of the UCI Admissions Office).

The program offers a five-day educational course and research project designed specifically for high school students. Its purpose is to cultivate the next generation of Asian American leaders and create an inclusive environment where students can explore and research topics related to Asian American identity and community development.

The program also investigates the interconnections between self-care and community care, which are essential steps in addressing and combating anti-Asian hate and discrimination in society.

The “Taste of Tradition: A Journey Through Asian American Identity” community engagement project is one of the key research themes of this five-day program. Through interviews with elders who immigrated to the U.S. in their early years, the project specifically focuses on their eating habits, recipes, and life experiences, with the aim of preserving precious cultural and historical records.

These records will help future generations understand and respect cultural diversity, and ensure that the immigrant experience and personal stories are preserved and honored.

If you are an Asian American elder willing to share your early immigration experiences, eating habits, and recipes, please contact Elizabeth Chan at elizabeth.chan827@gmail.com.
