To further promote Chinese culture and bring traditional Chinese music to the Broadway stage, the South Coast Chinese Orchestra is expanding its recruitment of talented musicians passionate about music and cultural heritage!
Individuals of all ages with three or more years of experience in either Chinese or Western instruments are welcome to audition.
Founded in 2017 under the leadership of Janie Tsao, Board Chair of SCCCA and Yulan Chung, CEO of SCCCC , the South Coast Chinese Orchestra is led by conductor and composer Bin He, with Guzheng virtuoso Jiangli Yu serving as the Artistic Director.
The orchestra aims to transcend cultural boundaries and unite diverse communities by creatively blending Chinese and Western instruments. This innovative approach seamlessly integrates traditional Chinese, classical, and modern music styles, pushing the boundaries of musical expression.
The South Coast Chinese Orchestra has earned acclaim for its dynamic performances. In early 2024, it made its debut at the Grammy Museum’s Lunar New Year concert, bringing Chinese music to a global stage.
The orchestra also premiered original musical productions Mulan and Monkey King, composed by Bin He and performed at the prestigious Segerstrom Concert Hall.
These productions uniquely combined Chinese folk tales with Western strings, rock music, and various performing arts.
In October 2024, the orchestra unveiled its brand-new large-scale original musical, Legends, featuring stunning musical storytelling that brought to life epic battles, enchanting underwater palaces, touching family bonds, and tales of courage and sacrifice.
The production blended pop songs, Peking opera, Chinese drums, martial arts, dance, and rhythmic gymnastics, delivering a spectacular feast for the senses.
The South Coast Chinese Orchestra currently includes Chinese instruments (erhu, dizi, guzheng, pipa, yangqin, etc.), Western strings (violin, viola, cello, double bass), and a rock band (electric guitar, bass, drums).
The South Coast Chinese Orchestra is expanding its search for talented individuals who are passionate about music and sharing Chinese culture.
Qualifications
Musicians proficient in Chinese instruments (such as guzheng, erhu, pipa, zhongruan, yangqin, and bamboo flute) or Western instruments (such as violin, viola, cello, and electric guitar) with three or more years of experience are encouraged to apply.
