As the Mid-Autumn Festival draws near, many of us are eagerly awaiting a beloved tradition: the enjoyment of mooncakes. These delicious pastries are rich in both flavor and cultural significance. But did you know these intriguing facts about them?

1. Ancient Origins: Mooncakes date back over a thousand years! Their history is intertwined with legends, notably the story of Chang'e and her devoted husband Houyi.
2. Hidden Messages: In the Yuan Dynasty, mooncakes were used to pass secret notes. Revolutionaries used them to share messages and plot against Mongol rule, leading to the establishment of the Ming Dynasty.
3. Varied Fillings: While the classic moon cake features a sweet lotus seed paste with a salted egg yolk center, there are endless regional and modern variations. Ever tried one with ice cream, chocolate, or even durian?
4. A Weighty Treat: Traditional moon cakes can be quite dense. A single mooncake with one egg yolk can contain around 800 calories! No wonder they're often shared among family and friends.
