Have you seen mooncake boxes piled high at the Aisan Supermarkets around Irvine?
As the Mid-Autumn Festival draws near, many of us are eagerly awaiting a beloved tradition: the enjoyment of mooncakes. These delicious pastries are rich in both flavor and cultural significance. But did you know these intriguing facts about them?
- Ancient Origins: Mooncakes date back over a thousand years! Their history is intertwined with legends, notably the story of Chang'e and her devoted husband Houyi.
- Hidden Messages: In the Yuan Dynasty, mooncakes were used to pass secret notes. Revolutionaries used them to share messages and plot against Mongol rule, leading to the establishment of the Ming Dynasty.
- Varied Fillings: While the classic moon cake features a sweet lotus seed paste with a salted egg yolk center, there are endless regional and modern variations. Ever tried one with ice cream, chocolate, or even durian?
- A Weighty Treat: Traditional moon cakes can be quite dense. A single mooncake with one egg yolk can contain around 800 calories! No wonder they're often shared among family and friends.
- Not Just for Eating: Mooncakes symbolize unity and togetherness. The round shape is reminiscent of a full moon, symbolizing completeness and reunion, making it a popular gift among family, friends and business associates during the festival.
- Intricate Designs: Traditional mooncake molds, which are hand-carved out of wood, can be customized. Craftsmen create molds based on personal designs or family emblems, making each mooncake unique. The beautiful patterns and characters on top of moon cakes often represent the bakery's name, the filling inside, or wishes for prosperity and happiness.
- DIY Mooncakes: With their growing popularity worldwide, many enthusiasts now make mooncakes at home, customizing flavors and designs. Ready to try your hand at it? You can find many recipes and videos online. We recommend beginners to start with the snow skin mooncakes which require no baking.
For many Chinese Americans in Irvine and Orange County, mooncakes have become a way to share and educate. Neighbors, colleagues, and friends are often gifted mooncakes, introducing them to this delightful tradition. This Mid-Autumn Festival (Sept 29, 2023), as we savor a piece of mooncake, let’s also share the rich tapestry of stories that come with each bite.
